HISTORY

Introduction

When at Georgia Lodge you are in the midst of the excitement of Montreat!  You will find that the Lodge has a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.  Come and share in the fellowship with others while attending Montreat conferences, your own church retreats, a family reunion, or maybe just a weekend away.

Georgia Lodge has a capacity of 28 persons.  Each room has electric baseboard heat.  Sheets and towels are provided.  All new mattresses were procured in 1999 and much of the house has been repainted.  All of the seven bathrooms have been renovated within the last six years.  A large deck behind the house is shaded by trees and can accommodate your group for cook-outs and picnics.  Thanks to many generous contributions, the deck is now connected to the second floor of the house, making loading and unloading from the parking lot even easier.

A wonderful playground (Robert Lake Park) for children, young and old, is located just across the street from the house.

Reservations

Reservations will be taken for the summer, no earlier than 8:00 a.m. (8:30 a.m. for churches outside of Georgia) on December 15 for groups wishing to rent the entire house and on January 2nd for individual rooms, at (828)669-7531.  We make every attempt to cooperate with youth groups needing to get registration materials in the mail to the conference center.

No reservations for less that the length of a conference will be accepted during the summer until three weeks prior to a conference.

History

The present building was built in 1905 as one of the initial buildings in Montreat.  It was built by C. E. Graham of Greenville, SC, who helped to finance the founding of Montreat as a 4000 acre conference center.

In July 1954, the former Synod of Georgia hastily endorsed the plans of the Women of the Church of the Synod to purchase a Georgia Home in Montreat.  The former "Hamilton Lodge" was secured from the Reverend and Mrs. Hugh Hamilton.  It was opened as Georgia Home in June 1955 and deeded to the Synod of Georgia.  Over the years it was owned and operated by each succeeding synod as the church was restructured.

On January 1, 1999 the Synod of the South Atlantic deeded the Lodge back to the five presbyteries in the State of Georgia, thus coming back full circle to its beginnings.  Today Georgia Lodge is operated by a Board appointed from each of the five presbyteries.
